AutoScarf is a project for crafters and math-curious people to make their own algorithmic scarves. No expertise required — just yarn and curiosity.
cellular automata scarves
that design themselves
AutoScarf is a community project where people around the world knit and crochet scarves using simple algorithms. You pick a rule that tells you what color comes next, follow it one stitch at a time, and watch the pattern develop row by row. Your hands are the computer! Over time we will be adding more AutoScarf patterns, an interactive design tool, and a place for you to record your progress.
We're looking for crafters and mathematicians of all levels to test our first patterns and determine where AutoScarf goes next. Fill out the form to let us know about your experience, your interests, and what you'd like to make.
These are our initial patterns for the AutoScarf project. We're starting with designs that are easy to follow and beautiful to make, inviting crafters and mathematicians into the practice of stitching algorithms.
We learn by making. In this space, we're sharing the full process: the pattern experiments that failed spectacularly, design iterations that made things better, and milestones along the way.
